Google Docs session and Twitter session

Jeremy Hersch on Google Docs
  • Here are my notes from Jeremy's session on Google Docs. I LOVE Google Docs, so I'm excited to be here!
  • Jeremy strongly recommends downloading Google Chrome as a browser. Me too! Google Docs will work best on Chrome.
  • Great because all your files are in the Cloud, which means you never have to worry about files being saved on just one machine.
  • It's like Microsoft Office, with Document, Presentation, and Spreadsheet
  • The most powerful thing that Jeremy likes is Forms
    • Kids enter information themselves into a Google Form rather than filling it out on paper
Corey Bess on Twitter in Education
  • Uses Twitter to communicate with kids
  • All of Corey's stuff is on  http://cbessoneducation.blogspot.com/
  • His Twitter account is @coreybess
  • Corey has a board-approved social media policy and a mobile device policy
  • He has done the research to back up why Twitter makes a difference
  • Digital Native - true digital native is 7th grade or younger right now
    • Anyone older is really a "Digital Immigrant"
  • Mark Prensky's research shows the difference between digital natives and digital immigrants
  • Digital Natives think e-mail is stupid
  • Corey is all about Prezi--he doesn't believe in "Death by PowerPoint"
  • Lots of research he has gathered--good to have his hard data because I only gather empirical data :)
  • "Twitter can help build, or strengthen the community atmosphere within a class and potentially within an entire school"
  • When you create a school environment that is hostile to technology, you create a "Lord of the Flies" scenario where you put kids on an "island" where no rules apply because we're not teaching them anything about digital citizenship
  • Extrinsic rewards are sometimes needed to get kids started learning with social media
  • School-wide Twitter
    • Culture building
    • Scavenger hunt
    • Upcoming events
    • Updates during events
  • ASB Class using Twitter
    • Event reminders
    • Quick tool to get a hold of all students
    • Safe link between offcers/teacher and ASB
